Premier's wager: Police Minister must lose 20kg in a year

THE pressure is on Police Minister Jack Dempsey to lose 20kg after his boss revealed their wager on the public record.

Premier Campbell Newman told Queensland Parliament on Tuesday he would call on other members in the LNP party room to conduct "a proper weigh-in with scrutineering" ahead of the 12-month challenge.

There is a bottle of Bundaberg rum on the table if the MP can achieve his goal.

"You're looking slimmer already," members yelled out when the Bundaberg MP took the floor.

Bundaberg was last year named the nation's obesity capital, with one in five people obese and one in four overweight.

Mr Dempsey said he hoped the challenge he set himself would inspire others to do the same.

"I believe in setting goals whether they be work or private goals," he said.

"I'll certainly work towards achieving that goal.

"It's something that'll not just be of benefit to me but to my family and five children.

"I do encourage other members of the community, not just Bundaberg, but right around Queensland to get on board and step up but do it in a healthy, safe way."

An excited Mr Newman said the figure had risen from 10kg last week to 20kg during a party room meeting on Monday.
