Nova Peris gamble pays off as first indigenous woman elected

JULIA Gillard's "Captain's pick" of selecting former Olympian Nova Peris for the Northern Territory Senate ticket has paid off, with the nation's first indigenous woman elected to the parliament.

Ms Peris secured nearly a full quota of votes at Saturday's election to take one of the two Senate seats in the Territory.

The former prime minister's selection of Ms Peris for the spot saw the unseating of long-term Labor Senator Trish Crossin, and created waves in Territory politics.

Ms Peris secured more than 32% of the Territory Senate vote, putting her in the best position to take the second seat.

Long-term Country Liberals Senator Nigel Scullion was also returned to his seat in the upper house.
