8 things you didn't know you could do at North Straddie

NORTH Stradbroke Island is the perfect getaway whether you plan to stay for a day, a week or even a month.

Known as Minjerribah to the traditional owners (the Quandamooka People), it is a haven to get back to nature, relax, and enjoy.

Accessible by ferry Straddie, as it is affectionately known, is a laid back escape that most people associate with camping and four-wheel driving but there is so much more to do than that. Here's what else is on offer:

1. See the local wildlife

We don't mean you have to walk around in the bush for hours in the hopes you may see a lizard. Straddie is the place to go for native wildlife as long as you know where to look. Dolphins come right up to the jetty at Amity Point at both sunrise and sunset (no feeding allowed!) and the kangaroos have their brekky and dinner at the top of the North Gorge walk every day. There are several well-known koalas around the place including one at the Amity Point Camping Ground as well as one at the Little Ship Club at Dunwich.

2. Learn about the land's traditional owners

The leisurely historical walk along the Goompi trail with a local Aboriginal guide will take approximately one hour. You'll learn about the Quandamooka people, artefacts, traditional hunting methods, bush tucker, bush medicines and heaps more.

3. Take on the North Gorge Walk, Straddie's pride and joy

More walking we know, but trust us it's worth it. This 1.2km walk is one of the best you'll ever experience. From the rocky outcrops, look out to the turquoise sea and you'll spot dolphins, manta rays, turtles, fish and even the occasional shark. If you're there at the right time of day you may even see some kangaroos (see number one above).

The beauty nature has to offer on this island is remarkable.

4. Have a seafood lunch

There's nothing like the smell of hot chips and seafood accompanied by the sound of ripping butchers paper to make you hungry. Whatever your choice Straddie has some great seafood lunch options. Try Rufus King Seafoods at Amity Point or local secret, Mal Starkey's Seafood House for the freshest of the fresh seafood straight off the trawler. Fins and Fries at Meegera Place behind Bob's Shop is another great local spot to try.

5. Bring your best mate

No need to leave your furry best friend at home. Straddie has plenty of dog-friendly accommodation if you decide to stay longer. You can also check out Flinders and Home Beach as they are both on-leash, dog-friendly beaches and perfect for an afternoon stroll.

6. Two words, beach yoga.

You've seen it on Instagram and now's your chance. Yoga is held at Home Beach most weekends and on school holidays so you can really s t r e t c h out your holiday.

7. Take a freshwater dip

The beach isn't your only option for a swim on Straddie, head to Myora Springs at Dunwich for a quick dip. While you're there learn about this sacred gathering place for the Quandomooka people.

8. SUP it up

Head down to Flinders Beach (behind the Adder Rock camp ground) and hire a stand-up paddleboard to hit the waves, or get in touch with Straddie Stand Up Paddle and learn to SUP on calmer waters.

See - it's not all camping and four-wheel driving. For more fun things to do at Straddie, head HERE.
