46kg of marijuana found in buried container

DETECTIVES say they found 46kg of marijuana in a buried shipping container on the Southern Downs.

The cryovac-sealed drugs hauled from the Massie property, north of Warwick, ranged in quality from being in good condition to badly decomposed.

Based on conservative estimates the haul could have had a street value of up to half a million dollars.

Officers from the Brisbane-based Homicide Cold Case Unit are in Warwick this week taking stock of the evidence they have gained as part of their investigation into the 1974 disappearance and suspected murder of Barbara McCulkin and her daughters Vicki and Leanne.

Detective Inspector Mick Dowie said officers were "chipping away" with inquiries into the cold case.

The detection of the buried drugs came as part of the cold case investigation.

Officers had allegedly already uncovered $300,000 in cash, 30kg of marijuana and a number of weapons including a self-loading .22 rifle, a revolver, a .45 semi-automatic pistol and a pump-action shotgun at the same property.

Thomas Edward Martin, 66, was charged over the initial haul but police yesterday were yet to lay any further charges over the buried stash.

"We have come up this week to consolidate it all," Det Insp Dowie said.

"We will see what we have got and then go from there."

He praised the efforts of the Warwick Criminal Investigation Branch in finding the drugs.

"The local boys are doing a great job."
