Uber hits back at $350 Coast ride claims

UPDATE

AN Uber spokesperson contacted the Daily and said they looked up the trip in question and claimed the fare was actually $278.78 and trip length was 38 minutes.

"Uber's goal is to make sure you can always push a button and get a ride within minutes - even when it's busiest over the holidays," they said.

"And dynamic pricing helps ensure that choice is always available."

A COAST couple are warning Uber users to be aware of surges this festive season after they were charged seven times the normal rate.

Karin Walker and her husband Anthony were issued a staggering $350 fare for a 30 minute trip from Mooloolaba to their home in Doonan on Saturday night.

To make matters worse, it was Mr Walker's boss who ordered the Uber for them and ultimately footed the bill.

"My husband's boss kindly offered to pay for our ride home," Mrs Walker said.

"Imagine our horror when my husband arrived at work this morning, only to be informed by a colleague that the Uber ride home had cost $350.

"Never in a million years would you'd think it would of cost that amount."

Mrs Walker said the Uber driver made them aware of a surge due to it being a peak time, but said it would only be around double what it would normally cost.

She then questioned whether a taxi would be cheaper but the driver assured her a taxi would cost three times the amount.

"It's left a very bad taste in my mouth," she said.

"To me that's criminal and almost what you'd pay for a taxi to Brisbane."

The couple are hoping to prevent others from ending up in the same situation and urge them to think twice before ordering an Uber.

"It was a big disappointment and perhaps we can help people open their eyes to it," she said.

"A lot of people will be using it over Christmas and probably won't be aware of how much they will be charged with the huge surge amounts.

"I think you'd be better off lining up in a taxi rank."

Mrs Walker said she tried to contact Uber to make a complaint but hadn't been able to reach anyone.
