$154.6 billion spent on health goods and services in year

A NEW report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows national expenditure of $154.6 billion on health goods and services in 2013-14.

This was a 3.1% increase compared with the previous financial year.

Australian Institute of Health and Welfare spokesman Dr Adrian Webster said the 2013-14 figures equated to a health spend of about $6639 for each person in Australia.

He said this was $94 more in real terms per person than in the previous year.

"This growth was lower than the average 5% annual growth over the decade, but more than the 1.1% growth seen in 2012-13, which was the lowest since the 1980s," he said.

"Funding over the decade by individuals was the fastest growing type of non-government funding, growing by an average of 6.2% a year in real terms compared with 5.3% for all non-government sources."
