Con artist scams $100 in shop

BUSINESSES are urged to be vigilant when accepting and changing money at registers, after a man went into a takeaway store and tried to trick an attendant into handing over cash.

Bundaberg police Sergeant Michael Prickett said the man, who was balding and appeared to be aged about 50, entered the Heidke St Subway store on Friday, bought a bottle of water and tried to pay with a $100 note.

Sgt Prickett said the man then began to confuse the attendant by placing $50 notes and a handful of coins on the bench and asking the woman to exchange that money for more notes.

As the shop attendant turned to the cash register, the man then removed money off the bench before demanding more.

"He tried to do it again and she realised what was happening," Sgt Prickett said.

He said the man got away with $100 more than what he was entitled to and police were now reviewing CCTV footage of the incident.

"He probably does this everywhere," Sgt Prickett said.

He warned businesses to be extra careful, as some may not realise they had been tricked until it came to balancing the tills at day's end.
