Groups smash Christmas Appeal target

Tags: mayor's christmas appeal

CHARITIES and sponsors yesterday gathered to celebrate the Bundaberg community's coming together to smash the $20,000 fundraising target for the 2011 Mayor's Christmas Appeal.

Bundaberg Mayor Lorraine Pyefinch said even with the difficult economic circumstances and the floods, the 2011 appeal was very successful and she thanked everyone for their generosity in donating $21,182.155.

"I'd like to thank the Bundaberg region for their support again. It really helps make Christmas special for those family and individuals," she said.

Salvation Army representative Don Cook said he was thrilled with the result.

"Last year was a tough year with the floods and people are still suffering," Mr Cook said.

"A target of $20,000 was set and, a couple of weeks out, I didn't think we'd make it.

"When the going gets tough, the people of Bundaberg really dig deep."

The appeal assists families in need by providing them with food hampers, toys and vouchers through the work of the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul. Both charities received $9500.

The Childers Neighbourhood Centre also received $2182.55 from the appeal.
