ROLLER DERBY: Rum City Derby Dolls will hold two sign-on days this weekend in the Extreme Zone Skate Centre at 45a Burrum St as they gear up for their inaugural season.
The sign-ons will run from 10am-4.30pm Saturday and 2-5pm Sunday and club secretary Kristin Freeman said if anyone was unsure whether the extreme sport was for them, they could give it a go first at their free "come and try" which will be held during those times.
"Come and meet with the members and find out what roller derby is all about," Freeman said.
"We are a brand new league in town, having had our first meeting on January 22, and since then, we have been blown away by the support with 25 members signed up already and over 250 followers on Facebook.
"We are lucky enough to have a number of experienced skaters, bouters and coaches who are keen to share their knowledge and help us develop our abilities.
"The community can't get enough of roller derby - it's something totally new and exciting and we want to show everyone just how fantastic the sport is.
"Even if you have never skated before or haven't skated in years, like many of our members, you can give it a go - remember that we all started somewhere and no-one will be pushed beyond their ability."
Freeman said a lot of their members joined for the fitness and had already been amazed by the results.
"Skating is a very physical exercise but you still have so much fun doing it - it's a fantastic sport because it is a fun family activity that anyone can get involved with," she said.
"We are also really keen to get merby (men's roller derby) and juniors up and rolling - it's so much fun and our goal is to get as many people skating as possible."
