Cultural feast of food and dance

The Gooreng Gooreng Dancers will be among the highlights of the Woolkoom Cultural Day at the Blue Water Club tomorrow.

The GOORENG Gooreng people will put on a dance and culinary spectacular as part of the Woolkoom Cultural Day tomorrow.

Organised jointly by the Bundaberg Celtics Basketball Association and the Gooreng Gooreng Dancers, visitors to the event will be able to feast on traditional indigenous culture at the Blue Water Sports Club at Burnett Heads.

The experience will include food, art and dance, unique to the Aboriginal culture.

Gooreng Gooreng elder Mervyn Johnson said some of the group had been dancing for 20 years in Bundaberg.

“It gives them confidence in their culture and where they come from,” he said.

“It’s important they know the language and the dances.”

People can learn to cook food traditionally underground, play hoops with the Celtics youth leaders, watch the dancers get painted and learn about the traditional markings and other traditions along with enjoying the ancient dances.

A feast will be cooked in Kuppa Murri style, with visitors encouraged to taste the delight.

Organisers are hoping to sell out the event, which will cater for up to 100 adults and 50 children.

People can still book tickets for the event, which will kick off at noon and run until 6pm.

A percentage of proceeds will help the Bundaberg teams attend the national basketball championships.
