Blazers brimming for a final upset

ACROSS The Waves mainstay Carly McCann can still taste the tears of last year's grand final loss.

A despondent figure after the game, McCann vowed that things would be different next year.

And after a season of dominance, the Bundaberg sportsperson of the year is in a position to hold true to her word.

“We are all really keen to work hard after last year's loss,” McCann said.

“Everyone is feeling very nervous, but we have trained well this week and I know we all want the same thing.”

They haven't been headed by Blazers, their grand final opponents, this year, but the young side has steadily mounted their challenge as the year has progressed.

Two weeks ago Waves gradually over-ran Blazers, but the red and black did enough to show they were not far off the pace and that they could upset Waves just like Alloway Purple did last year.

They will need to hope for an off night from the favourites though, as both sides know an on-song Across The Waves will walk away victors.

That's why Blazers will be doing their best to ruffle some feathers.

Youth and enthusiasm is the underdog's best weapon, with the promising Jaizdon Corrigan the main target up front, with sister Kisstee patrolling the centre.

“The key players will be Jaizdon and Amanda Dohrman at the shooting end, with Kisstee in the middle,” McCann confirmed.

“Ainsley Ackerman in defence will be tough to get past as well.”

To counter Blazers' youth is Across The Waves' experience.

Very few changes have been made to the team in the past years and with Sandy Baker at the helm there is no chance of them getting fazed by the finals occasion.

The friendships between both sides are quite strong, with all the girls growing up together – and more recently playing alongside each other in the Thundercats side.

“It's always hard playing them because we are so close, but we need to put that aside if we want to beat them,” Kisstee Corrigan said.
