POWDERFINGER, Hilltop Hoods and Eskimo Joe were among a host of Australian music acts recognised for their chart-topping success.

Jimmy Barnes, Short Stack, Angus & Julia Stone, John Butler Trio and Crowded House also picked up awards for their number one albums from May 1, 2009, to July 19, 2010, while Guy Sebastian, Vanessa Amorosi and Brian McFadden were recognised for their top ranked singles.

Sebastian and Delta Goodrem were awarded for having the highest selling album and single respectively, for the decade from 2000 to 2009.

A total of 14 Aussie music acts were recognised during the eighth annual ARIA No. 1 Chart Awards, held at the Sydney Opera House on Thursday.

Powderfinger, who are about to embark on their final Australian tour before calling an end to the band, were on hand to receive another ARIA Chart Award for Golden Rule, their fifth consecutive number one album.

Frontman Bernard Fanning said he was pleased to be part of a celebration of Australian music industry success.

"The entertainment market is so competitive now that the music industry has kind of been shrinking," he told AAP.

"So whenever it gets a chance to celebrate its successes, it will - with gusto."

Eskimo Joe guitarist Joel Quartermain said the ARIA Chart Awards were a good chance to highlight the industry's successes.

"In a time when the recording industry is having a tough time, with people downloading music for free, I think it's a good thing and it's only good publicity for the Australian music scene," he said.

Quartermain said his band never expected to top the charts.

"When we started this band we could not ever, possibly imagine that we'd be able to get a number one record - it just seemed completely impossible."

Australian hip hop group Hilltop Hoods were recognised for their album, State of the Art, which topped the charts for two weeks.

"It's a bit of a pat on the back, but it's not something you'd go thinking about when you're making music and putting an album together - but it's nice to have done it though," Pressure MC said.

ARIA chairman Ed St John was on hand for the presentation, announcing this year's ARIA awards would include two new categories and four new public voted categories.

The new awards are for best hard rock/heavy metal album and best adult alternative album. Details of the public voting categories will be released later, St John said.

The 2010 ARIA awards, music's annual awards night, will be held at the Sydney Opera House on November 7 and televised on Network Ten, which announced earlier this year it would again be airing the ceremony after a year off.
