Welcome upgrade for bowls club

BUNDABERG Bowls Club has been given a $22,000 shot in the arm, thanks to grants from Bundaberg Regional Council and the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

The club was able to buy a new mower, drilling machine, fertiliser spreader, lawn edger and undertake a laser levelling procedure, leaving it in the best shape it has been in for years.

The equipment upgrade had greenkeeper Peter Bock salivating with excitement, while club secretary Greg Mallett was over the moon with the support given by the council and gaming fund.

Mallett said the club was all about fostering the development of bowls in town, and the upgrade would help do just that.

“We have Bundaberg North High students playing and being coached at the club throughout the year, while we get a lot of social bowlers on the weekend having a game of barefoot bowls,” Mallett said.

“We’ve had to borrow other clubs’ equipment in the past when ours has broken down, so (the funding is) a welcome relief.”

The greenkeeper said the laser levelling was a big improvement to the green.

“You only get that sort of thing once in a blue moon, so the green will definitely benefit from that,” Bock said.
