Sex toys popular in Bundy

SEX has been good to Bundaberg mum Melissa Barron.

Less than 12 months ago, she was a total novice at selling sex toys and other adult products at parties in people's private homes.

But she found she was so good at it that today she is in charge of her company's whole Australian sales team of about 45 people.

She also gets a company car and mobile phone.

“I've recruited 28 people myself. Now we've got girls in every state,” she said.

Making sure she keeps her hand in, Mrs Barron still does six to eight parties a month herself.

“When I first went into it I didn't think I would make a lot but it's been way bigger than we thought,” she said.

“They're just like Tupperware parties, only a lot more fun.”

Mrs Barron, who works for a company called Positively Pink, said her parties were popular because people were in their own homes, with their own friends, and they did not need to be embarrassed at what they were looking at.

She said her parties attracted a wide range of customers.

“We have people from 18 to 86 at the parties,” she said.

“I've had grandmothers at my parties — in fact, one of my biggest buyers is a grandmother.”

Mrs Barron said the parties catered for hen's nights and girls' nights out but most of the time they were for couples.

And the men did more of the buying than the women, she said.

Mrs Barron said overcoming the embarrassment factor was a big challenge.

“Once we've got started and played a few games people loosen up, and it's not in-your-face selling,” she told the NewsMail.

“I work the games around the people I've got in the group.”

People were also reassured when they found out that only Mrs Barron knew what they were ordering.

“Even the hostess doesn't know what people have ordered,” she said.

“The goods they have ordered go out in sealed black bags so they're totally discreet.

“No one has to walk down the street with a brown bag in their hand.”
