PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd has flagged a "very significant" increase in funding for the training of GPs and specialists.

Mr Rudd was touring Queanbeyan hospital with Health Minister Nicola Roxon on Monday morning ahead of the announcement of another element of the government's hospital and health reform program.

He told two doctors who he met on his tour that the government was planning to invest a significant amount in the funding and training of GPs as well as funds for more training of specialists.

Mr Rudd spent the weekend talking to the premiers of Queensland and Victoria in a bid to get them on board to his plan ahead of the Council of Australian Governments meeting on April 11.
