Bundaberg Sportfishing Club member Darryl Lindeman wants anglers to reduce their carbon footprint by switching to clean outboard technology.
THE Bundaberg Sportfishing Club will embark on what could be a first when it hosts an event to raise environmental awareness among anglers.
The Bundy crew has taken the initiative to dispel public and political perception that fishers are environmental vandals.
“Every greenie will tell you we’re the bane of the earth,” club member Darryl Lindeman said.
“But we want to be known as a club that’s out there for more than just fishing, to make sure our kids have something to fish for.
“We’re putting it out there for people to see how easy it is to change. That’s what we have to do.”
The event, to be held at the PCYC on Saturday, June 5 from 1-5pm, will focus on reducing the carbon footprint of recreational anglers and reducing rubbish, as well as solar energy and fuel alternatives.
Guest speakers are expected to include renowned marine biologist and fish health expert Dr Ben Diggles, biofuels expert Gary Fooks and Clean-up Australia Day representatives.
It is also hoped to feature displays on the latest in clean outboard technology and the new range of biodegradable fishing line.
Bioline features a six-year life-cycle and is non-toxic, compared to the 600-year cycle of the petroleum-based monofilament commonly used today.
Mr Lindeman said the old two-stroke outboards strapped to the back of many a Bundaberg vessel were a huge environmental concern.
“The bigger problem right now is that stuff coming out the back of outboards,” he said.
The pollution of waterways with anglers’ rubbish was also an issue.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been to the boat ramp and not found an old ice bag, or bait bag,” Mr Lindeman said.
“As a fisherman, if you see somebody doing it, get upset, because you’re being tarred with the same brush.
“That’s what I want our fishos to realise.”
Funding for the event was made possible through a $5000 federal grant, sourced by club secretary Geoff Hodge.
Organisers are seeking industry support to help make the day as informative and entertaining as possible.
