Tourism concerns over backpackers

BUNDABERG North Burnett Tourism (BNBT) chair Greg Barnes is concerned about recent complaints relating to the local backpacker industry.

Mr Barnes said, while he was unable to comment on individual allegations, he had little doubt many of the complaints were well founded. “We know for a fact that there is a very real problem out there involving serious allegations of exploitation, abuse and the denial of basic human rights for some visiting backpackers,” he said.

Mr Barnes said the information was detrimental to the reputation of the city, the region and reputable operators.

“It’s unacceptable and, quite frankly the tourism industry and I think, most within the community who take pride in their region, are sick and tired of it. Apart from the impact on the tourism industry, it is a recognised fact that a drop in the availability of itinerant workers who are prepared to undertake the arduous work required on many farms could also impact on the agricultural and horticultural industries on which the region depends .”
