CRICKET: Brothers Cricket Club has appealed the decision that will see batsman Adam Rayner miss Sunday’s grand final.
Rayner was found guilty of indulging in conduct detrimental to the game and using crude and abusive language.
He was given a two-week suspension, which was advanced to 10 weeks and a $400 fine on the back of his suspended sentence.
Brothers Cricket president Vince Habermann was adamant his star was in the right.
“I would have hoped they’d dismiss the charge based on evidence,” Habermann said.
“He didn’t swear, and they accepted that, but they deemed it was still considered crude enough to be penalised.
“And the original report should not have been allowed because it was made by someone in an unofficial capacity.”
Rayner was unavailable for comment, but he did say on Saturday that work commitments might rule him out of the final anyway.
Brothers captain David Boge was resigned about the situation.
“I’m a little over it all now, to be honest. Whether or not he is suspended, we will just have to win without him,” he said.
The date of the appeal is yet to be finalised.
