Cr Alan Bush is in the hot seat as he speaks about his two years on Bundaberg Regional Council.
AN increase of 40% in Bundaberg Regional Council water rates has been flagged as the council prepares for fluoridation of its water supply.
The State Government has committed to having fluoridation in place for all Queenslanders by 2012, but Cr Alan Bush said it had reneged on its promise of funding to help councils put in the necessary infrastructure.
“They initially said they would help us with the costs, but now they say they are not going to do it for fluoridating underground water, only surface water,” he said.
Cr Bush, who oversees water and wastewater issues, said 70% of the region’s drinking water came from underground water, and the council would have to put in the infrastructure to fluoridate it.
“We’re going to have to increase water rates by 40% or not provide as good a service,” he said.
Cr Bush said fluoridation was one area where the State Government set the guidelines with no debate or community consultation.
“We only drink 1% of our treated water – the rest of the fluoridated water will go on sports fields or down toilets,” he said.
Cr Bush said one of the biggest challenges coming up was a council plan to sewer the whole coastline strip from Burnett Heads to Elliott Heads.
This would also involve the decommissioning of the East Bundaberg waste water treatment plant and the building of a super treatment plant to handle the result.
Cr Bush said the project had not been fully costed yet and he had no idea what the price would be.
One project on hold was a plan to pump treated water from Bargara to a holding pond for Bundaberg Sugar to use for irrigation.
“It’s still on the books; we’re hoping to get some federal funding,” he said.
Cr Bush refused to rate himself or the council, although he said it was doing a good job compared with its neighbours.
“How can you rate yourself? That’s up to others to do,” he said.

Isn't it strange, doctors cannot force one person to take a drug, yet the government wants to force everyone to be drugged with fluoride, a prescription drug, against their will and with no medical supervision.
Fluoridation is an absolute waste of tax money.
For example, for every $1000 of fluoride chemical added to water, $995 would be directly wasted down the drain, $5 would be consumed in water by the people, and less than $2.50 would be consumed by children. Can you think of a more wasteful government program?
A plan to give away fluoride tablets free to whoever wants them would be much, much cheaper. Then the rest of us would not be drugged against our will and the environment would be protected.

Councillor Bush is right. Residents will have to pay much more for the service once fluoride becomes part of it. As we have found in Geelong the costs of water have gone up after the fluoride went in. But as our local industry can't legally dump its fluoride waste into the environment except by putting it into our drinking water that is just what they do.
Under the laws of any business transaction, Geelong people had to pay more for this fluoride waste to be added. And it seems Bundaberg folk will have to as well.

Many research studies show fluoridation is ineffective, including 14 years of data from 17 countries by the World Health Organization and very large studies in Tucson, AZ, New Zealand, Japan and India.
The latest was recently published by a dentist in the main U.S. Dental Journal (JADA). You should go read it yourself.
"JADA Study Proves Fluoridation is Money down the Drain"
NEW YORK, Sept. 29, 2009
Children's cavity rates are similar whether water is fluoridated or not, according to data published in the July 2009 Journal of the American Dental Association by dentist J.V. Kumar of the NY State Health Department(1),

How rediculous, a 40% increase in rates for flurodated water, yes this is a good thing and should have been done years ago. The doubters only have to look at the diiference between Queenslanders and Southerners teeth to see this.
But i for one balk at the 40% increase when, 99% of that water goes onto sporting fields and down toilets. Maybe the majority of the increase should go to sporting clubs to keep their grass nice and green and do they currently even pay for the water.
It would be interesting to see how the council have indeed even costed this, should they make these costings public for all to see? my word they should.
As far as the State Government goes, well i see it like this, if they don't want to come to the party and fund it like they initialy said, then don't do it. Stand up to them for goodness sake, don't let them play the bully boy tactics. Tell them that our council can't afford it unless they are willing to pay, in the long run what are they going to do to you, take your birthday of you.
Our rates have gone up enough, we now have one of the highest rates in Queensland and we are a regional town, we haven't got the luxuries of a capital city, but we do have the rates.
Just remember one thing, there has to be a ceiling and when that ceiling is reached which it almost is, people will not be able to pay their rates. What will happen then, you will have people defaulting on their rate payments and when this happens you the council will not have the funds coming in twice a year like you do now and this is the money you rely on to keep the council ticking over. You can't get blood out of a stone, so if you are game enough to go down that road go right ahead, you won't be the first council in Queensland to have gone broke, i hope you like your jobs.

Just let me say that we only drink 100% RAINWATER and NON of the treated town water – the whole lot of the fluoridated water is going to garden watering, on sports fields and down to toilets. We are forced against our will to this scheme and therefore we must seek any other ways to be exempted from this type of upon forced rip-off plan...!

You are right J Willie. No research has ever been done properly to show fluoridation works. Dentists and journals are now finding this out. But politicians will be the last to see this information while they are made to go on pushing fluoridation.
But the big problem isn’t that industry waste won’t reduce tooth decay. It is the extremely uncomfortable toxic effects of fluoride on communities drinking and eating this treatment that are the worst thing.
The fundamental mistake made by anyone thinking fluoride is safe is to ever have listened to those government claims. Hey – they are the ones putting it into your water.
We know the heads of tobacco companies went on saying smoking was safe even after the evidence of harm was in. And now government and some dentists are doing the same with fluoride.
Just toss their false claims of safety where they belong - in the bin! You only have to look at the official chemical health warnings for fluoride to see what it does:
http://www.jtbaker.com/msds/englishht...
They list the exact illnesses people all over Geelong suddenly developed after Geelong was fluoridated.
Talking about costs, Cr Bush must ask will people who become ill then stop turning on their taps and go and buy non-fluoridated water? If the council is going to fluoridate surely they must pay the cost of the safe unfluoridated water so many people have to buy after they become sick.
This is a very serious situation as some people in Geelong became so ill they would have died had they kept using the fluoridated water. Council must become aware of what is really happening before thinking of making the same thing happen to its own people.
So far most councils have dodged doing this. But checking out the health problems BEFORE they give them to people surely MUST concern members of every fluoridating council.

Give the schools free flouridated water in bottles, leave the town water alone. It's called freedom of choice.
