5PM UPDATE: MORE severe thunderstorms are expected to hit south-east Queensland later Tuesday afternoon, bringing very heavy rain and localised flash flooding.

MORE severe thunderstorms are expected to hit south-east Queensland later Tuesday afternoon, bringing very heavy rain and localised flash flooding, according to a Bureau of Meteorology warning bulletin.

At 5.01pm, the Bureau detected large thunderstroms in the Brisbane CBD, Logan City, Ipswich City, Scenic Rim and parts of Gold Coast, Lockyer Valley, Gympie, Moreton Bay, Sunshine Coast, Somerset and Toowoomba areas.

About midday on Tuesday, Brisbane's CBD experienced its heaviest rainfall in nine years with 80 millimetres recorded in just 50 minutes. Several suburbs flooded.

Further north, a woman was stuck by lightning as severe storms ripped through the Sunshine Coast.

Emergency Management Queensland advises people should avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters, seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees, avoid using the telephone during the thunderstorm and beware of fallen trees and powerlines.

For more information, head to www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 219. For emergency assistance call the SES on 132 500.
