BUNDABERG Women’s Rugby League secretary Rebecca Taylor is on a mission to see the region’s first all-female league competition running this season.

Taylor hopes each club in the Bundaberg Rugby League could field nine, 11 or 13-a-side teams in open women and under-15 divisions.

Speaking at last night’s sign-on at Brothers Sports Club, Taylor said support for the concept had been amazing.

“We’ve had girls coming out of the woodwork,” she said.

One such participant was 12-year-old Bundaberg State High School student Courtney Bond, who will line up in the under-15 division.

Although she has played league against the boys before, she reckons an all-female competition will be “fun and exciting”.

It is expected the fixtures will include rule modifications such as shortened halves and reduced playing surface.

A special meeting to discuss the competition’s make-up will be held on March 3.

Women interested in having a go at league can sign on today at Brothers from 9am-1pm, ATW from 9am-noon and Easts from 2-3.30pm.

Childers will host its sign-on tomorrow from 10am-2pm.
