A WANDERING kitten has caused heartache for the Herbert family after the cat was put down after just a few hours at the RSPCA.

Norville resident Michala Herbert said after knocking on doors in the area she discovered her kitten had been found by a neighbour and taken to the RSPCA.

Ms Herbert claimed when she arrived at the shelter she was told her kitten, Lucky, had been put down as there were too many kittens at the shelter.

“I burst into tears and had to leave. I just couldn’t understand why they would do that,” she said.

Ms Herbert said her children were devastated by the news.

“My two-year-old keeps saying to me that if we buy her food she will come back, because she doesn’t understand,” she said.

RSPCA Bundaberg Shelter manager Vicki Beer said the kitten had been euthanased because it had scabs on its back, which looked like ringworm, and there was nowhere to quarantine Lucky.

“We have to look at the big picture and it would not just be one cat to euthanased if it was ringworm,” she said.

It was not until the Herberts arrived at the shelter to claim Lucky did the RSPCA discover the scabs on the kitten’s back had been caused from a bad reaction to flea powder.
