A BARGARA family is angry and distraught after their two family dogs were tortured - and one possibly sexually assaulted - after escaping their yard.

The nine-year-old female Staffordshire terrier had to be put down after the disturbing attack, while her 10-year-old playmate is recovering after a severe battering.

The family was away for the weekend, and believe the dogs escaped the house, only to be picked up by the sick perpetrators.

The dogs were found on Barrons Road, just outside Burnett Heads.

“Where are these people’s conscience? It’s just disgusting, unbelievable,” the owner, who wished to remain anonymous, said.

“You couldn’t print what I really felt, but ultimately we want to try and catch these people and don’t want it happening to someone else’s pet.”

Veterinarian Tim Hill, who treated the dogs, said the Staffordshire bitch’s injuries were like nothing he had encountered in 15 years of practising.

The incident, which occurred a fortnight ago, left the dog with the sort of bleeding and bruising that led the vet to believe this was not the result a dog fight, and possibly that of a sexual assault.

“We don’t know what actually caused the injuries, but my gut feeling was that something undesirable has happened to this dog,” Mr Hill said.

“I see things every day, but this made me ill. I’ve never seen a presentation of injuries like this on any other animal in my 15 years.”

Severe haemorrhaging meant the dog needed a blood transfusion when it arrived at the Bundaberg Veterinary Clinic.

It was heavily medicated, constantly vomiting and in agony, before the owners decided euthanasia was the kindest option.

Its 10-year-old counterpart had received cuts and bruising from a severe bashing.

Still carrying its war wounds, the dog is now afraid of the outdoors and constantly shakes, according to its owners.

The two pets had grown up with the family and their two children and had never been aggressive, they say.

“It’s just gut wrenching. It broke our heart to see her in such pain and obviously it was tough for the kids,” the mother said.

Bundaberg RSPCA shelter manager Vicki Beer said torture such as this was rare in the region.

“This is the first incident like this I’ve heard of in Bundaberg,” she said.

“But it is absolutely abhorrent, disgusting and feral. The people who did this are sick, but unless someone comes forward with information they will get away with it.”

The owners are offering a financial reward for any information, and Mrs Beer urged potential witnesses to telephone the RSPCA on 4155 1736.

This is absolutely devistating not only for the dogs and their family but also for our society as we need to address deep dark issues in some human's nature.
These person's or person are in desperate need of help.
Somewhere along the line of their upbringing they have been exposed to the idea that such attitude and behaviours are acceptable. I have to ask "what has happened to them for them to be like this and more to the point what can we do to turn them around".

This stroy is absolutely terrible, and brought me to tears, to think that someone could hurt these dogs in the ways they have stated, is unimaginable, and should be sentenced to a long time in jail.
I hope they find whoever did this and you get what you deserve.

I can't beleive that someone could do such a disgusting, inhuman and horrific thing to those beautiful dogs. My dogs are my family and to think that someone out there is so disturbed as to do that, makes me shudder. Jail is too good for them. If they are caught will the law take appropriate action or give them a slap on the wrist? I know what I would do if they were mine.

How disgraceful it is to know that there are people out there who enjoy inflicting pain and torture on innocent animals!

I don't care if these people think the system has cheated them or if they had a hard upbringing, there is a definite point of right and wrong!

Some people are just plain evil spirits, simple as that! Those who not only think but actually bring themselves to do these terrible acts are the work of the devil and should be punished accordingly.

I get so fed up of hearing of cases where people have acted out the worst forms of animal cruelty and get a slap on the wrist, a small fine, etc... What is even more scary is often those who start out with animal cruelty end up abusing or murdering people also.

I hope they catch this person or people who made these two beautiful family pets suffer so horribly and print their name REALLY BIG in the papers and not protect but expose the perpetrators!

This incident is not only despicable and past any reasoning or logic, but i would be very concerned if i lived in the Bagara
One can only be sure that had this low life, and let us pray there is only one individual and not more than one roaming our streets, will and probably has already done other barbaric acts as this.
If i was in this community i would be galvanizing the locals and hunting out this creature or creatures.I wouldnt give them the right of a court hearing and if they were lucky, a plush jail sentence in one of our luxurious resorts,we call jail.An eye for an eye would be the only just punishment for something that would even contemplate this.
Some one out there knows who is responsible for this
act and we can only hope they are uncovered before these acts escalate and it happens again.I would be locking up my children and pets until this scum is uncovered if i was living in this area.
My heart goes to the owners and as a staffy owner and breeder i cry for you and your dear boy who survived this outrage

Horrendous! what an ordeal for this family. My question is this - what are the QLD Police doing about investigating this disturbing crime? Clearly there is someone very sick, dangerous and demented out there in the nearby community. It is the job of Police to protect life and property. Either way a dog is a 'life' on this earth or at the very least such dogs being much loved pets of a family should be 'property'. Lets hope the QLD Police will be working closely with the RSPCA to solve this case swiftly. Rare cases such as this deserve the input of a combined response including the Police, RSPCA and the cooperation and involvement of the wider community.
