WITH the climate creating dryer conditions once more in south-east Queensland, the threat of bushfires this season is very real.
A BUILDING in the CBD was threatened when three simultaneous fires started in Quay Street yesterday.
Bundaberg fire-fighter station officer Trevor Duncan said the fires started on three sides of the Main Roads district office just before 2pm, but they did not know how they had ignited.
“The main fire (on the riverbank) started directly behind the Main Roads building,” he said.
“The back of the building and the equipment stored there were threatened.”
The second fire was in the grass on the vacant block next door, while another was in the gully on the opposite side of the building.
Main Roads spokesman Neil Ross was in the building when the fires started, and said their timing caused “maximum disruption”.
