BUNDABERG Hospital made an early start on administering swine flu vaccines yesterday, with the first jabs getting under way from 6.30am.

First in line were health care workers, inpatients and outpatients.

Director of nursing and maternity services Debbie Carroll said she was glad the vaccine was finally being rolled out.

"I certainly had mine this morning," she said.

Ms Carroll said priority for vaccination was given to more vulnerable groups.

"Initially we will be concentrating on vaccinating groups who are vulnerable to more severe outcomes from this virus including pregnant women, indigenous people and people with underlying medical conditions," she said.

"These medical conditions include heart disease, asthma and other lung diseases, cancer, obesity, diabetes, kidney and liver disease and neurological disease.

"Parents and guardians of infants up to six months old, and children aged 10 and older in special schools are also a high priority for vaccination."

More than 150 patients and health workers received H1N1 vaccination throughout the day at Bundaberg, Monto, Childers, Mundubbera and Gayndah hospitals.

Children under the age of 10 are still exempt from the vaccine as the results from trials on younger children will not be available until late October or early November.

Renal unit patient Maureen Ruthenberg was glad to receive the H1N1 vaccine.

"For me it is very important because I have been in hospital with asthma," she said.

"I think people should get it if they can, especially if they have chest complaints."

Ms Carroll said people wishing to get the vaccine should visit their GP.
