Gymnasts take on Qld's best

BUNDABERG'S young stars will travel to the Sunshine Coast this weekend to take on some of the state's top talent in the 2009 Gymnastics Queensland State Club Championships.

The PCYC-based Coral Isles Gymnastics club will send a team of five gymnasts to compete in the championships, which start in Caloundra this Friday.

A level three team including Dannalee Williams, Charlotte Kurtz, Indyanna Bengston, Bree Moodie and Georgia Martin will hope to come away with some silverware.

“This event will showcase the remarkable talent of Queensland's regional champion clubs and determine who will be named Queensland's best in 2009,” Queensland Gymnastic's Kym Dowdell said.

“Queensland is producing some wonderful gymnastics talent at the moment, with four of our home grown athletes - rhythmic gymnast Danielle Prince and artistic gymnasts Sam Simpson, Joshua Jefferis and Larissa Miller - selected to compete at the World Championships in London this October.”

Bundaberg's stars will be confident heading to Caloundra after showing fine form at the Yeppoon Invitational.

Six-year-old Maddison Morris starred for the club, taking out first in the level one, under-8s girls' event.

Nikita Markey came second in the event while Jayde Cockburn came second in the over-8s, level one event.

Georgie Bengston came third in that category while Samantha Vella came second in the level two, over-9s.

“It was a really successful tournament for all the girls who competed,” Ms Dowdell said.
