TREVOR Spohr wore two hats at the Woodgate Arts in Winter Festival over the weekend - collector and artist all rolled into one.

“I like collecting the work of other artists as well, I support them and I know how tough it is to survive as an artist,” Mr Spohr said.

With his own works on display, Mr Spohr said the second festival was “packed all weekend” with artists and visitors.

“I think a lot of artists gravitate to places that are inspiring, and I think Woodgate is an inspiring location to live, and it also gives an artist some peace and quiet to be able to create,” he said.

“I'm quite fascinated by the amount of artists that live in that area and the quality of the work that they produce.”

One of his works, Woody Island Offset Letter Press, was inspired by a trip to the island where he found some turtle bones.

“The other idea was walking on the island and discovering where the old lighthouse keeper's house was, and just thinking about using found objects,” he said.

“That idea of thinking about objects that are separate and putting them together to make something else.”

He said the atmosphere at the exhibition was stimulating.

“Jenny McDuff is instrumental in creating a group of artists around her that is quite infectious, she's got a great energy,” he said.

He said he'll be back “boots and all” for the next festival.

Festival event co-ordinator Helen Brett said the weekend was a great success.

“It was much bigger and better than last year,” she said.

“The quality of the artworks was much superior and that was probably the biggest comment that people made during the day.”

She said people travelled in from as far away as Mundubbera just to spend time at the festival.

Ms Brett said the event highlighted just how much Woodgate had to offer, and her fondest memory was how the visitors received it.

“I think the combination of being able to look at quality art and then sit down and relax in the sun and listen to fabulous music by the beach is very warming to a lot of people,” she said.
