Fun rolled out for brothers and sisters

PARIS and Piper Hillier often help out when their older sister Cody requires treatment for cystic fibrosis, but yesterday they took the chance to unwind at Cystic Fibrosis Queensland's (CFQ) sibling activity day.

“Sometimes my sister can get sick, and other times we are able to play with her, but it's fun to come here with some other kids who have sick relatives and have a fun day,” Paris said, while enjoying the day with other siblings of cystic fibrosis sufferers at Bundy Bowl and Leisure.

The disease is Australia's most common life-threatening genetic condition and has implications not just for the patient, but their entire family and support network.

It is a genetic illness that affects a number of organs in the body by clogging them with mucus.

“Many of our clients are unable to schedule family holidays or attend events as they never know when they might become ill,” CFQ chief executive officer Jane Andersen said.

“That's why the sibling activity days are all about supporting the children who are already so patient and supportive of their own siblings.”

Efforts continue to develop new treatments and today's improvements mean most people with cystic fibrosis are able to lead reasonably normal and productive lives.
