Blazers blow away Cosmos

WINDY conditions made scoring difficult in Saturday's division one netball matches at Daph Geddes Park, where Blazers were the only team to leave the venue with a victory.

Blazers coach Amanda Cormick said her team's 61% goal average was less than she expected, but attributed the conditions and an improved performance by Cosmos as factors in the shooting.

“We normally try and shoot at 80%,” Cormick said.

“But Cosmos have improved.

“It was a really hard-fought game, played considerably well by both teams under the conditions.”

She said Blazers did well to hold the game with their winning score of 39-37.

“We made a lot of silly mistakes, but I'm happy with the fact we held on to win,” she said.

“Cosmos played aggressively and their shooters were strong.”

For Natives, it was a case of 'oh so close', in their 40-all draw with Alloway Blue.

“It's just teasing us I'm sure,” Natives captain Helen Leggett said.

“We were down for most of the game then got in front in the last quarter.

“But they came back at us and we got away with the draw.”

Leggett said there were only two players above the age of 20 in the team, and with more experience the victories will come.

“Ours is only a young team and we've been gradually improving in the last four games and getting close,” she said.

“It would be just good to get that first one up for our coach Daph Soppa - she's been so patient.”

Alloway Blue coach Lyn Newport said her team had failed to lead into open spaces, and too many passes were intercepted but conceded that Natives had improved.

“Aleena Greenhalgh, coming back from a good week at Confraternity shot very well for us,” Newport said.

The clash between ATW Gold and Alloway Purple resulted in another draw for the day with the scores at 39 all.
