Asbestos find at Fairymead

WITH demolition work under way at the former Fairymead sugar mill, which closed in 2005, asbestos experts leapt into action after an unexpected find of the dangerous material.

Bundaberg Sugar general manager Ray Hatt said the demolition work was being undertaken by contractor CMA Corporation, which was licensed to remove asbestos.

“They found asbestos somewhere we weren't expecting it,” said Mr Hatt, adding that the company kept an asbestos register of all known instances on its premises.

“They dampened it down and cleared it up.”

The unexpected asbestos find was made on Wednesday, and by yesterday morning the material had been disposed of safely.

Workplace Health and Safety officials also attended the site.
