RYAN Burgess had just sat down for dinner at Viva Italia restaurant when he heard a horrifying thud.

The man was thrown metres through the air before landing outside the Bourbong Street Cellars.

As Mr Burgess ran to help, he could hear screams from the restaurant as other diners realised what had happened.

“I ran over and dialled 000,” Mr Burgess said.

“Everyone just started screaming.”

Diners abandoned their food to help direct traffic around the crash, with emergency services on the scene within minutes.

Mr Burgess tried to help the man with directions from the emergency services operator while waiting for paramedics, but he was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after Queensland Ambulance Service officers arrived.

“He was declared dead very quickly, after suffering gross trauma,” a Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said.

Gold Coast visitor Anna Bamford was at the restaurant with her eight-year-old son Oscar.

“The sound of it was so awful,” Ms Bamford said.

She said her son had also witnessed the crash.

“He said 'Mum, I feel sick', and looked like he was going to faint,” she said.

The accident took place just before 6.30pm at the busy intersection of Bourbong and Bingera streets, in view of diners from several restaurants and take-away shops.

The intersection has no pedestrian crossing or traffic lights.

The driver of the white utility stopped at the scene.

A male was taken to Bundaberg Hospital suffering from shock.

Queensland Police could not confirm the victim's identity or where he was from last night, as next-of-kin were being notified.

The forensic crash unit is investigating.
