BOXING: Any bloke who fancies himself in the ring or reckons he can sling a bit of leather can get a fight at tonight's gala fight night at the Globe Hotel.
The event has been organised to raise funds for Sid Blair's Bundaberg Boxing League and features some of Bundaberg's novice amateur boxers and combatants in preparation for next week's Wide Bay titles.
“Last year we had footballers and backpackers line up for a fight,” Sid Blair said.
“We've already got some footballers and I expect some backpackers will come along too.
“It's a pretty big night.”
Blair said there were already 15 fights planned for the evening.
“They'll be three rounders over one minute each,” he said.
“We could have up to 20 or more fights on the night.”
Medical facilities will be provided at the venue and no contender with alcohol on his breath will be allowed to fight.
A number of heavyweights and super heavyweights from Blair's troupe are on the card, headed by Cass Campbell who fights at 90kg.
Kerry Wheeler at 80kg and Christian Green at 89kg are also among the bigger fighters.
In the mid-range divisions are 18-year-old twins Wade and Brodie Hurley in the 60kg class, while at the lower end of the weights is Jake Russell who weighs in at 30kg.
Giving full support to the fund-raiser is Bob Butler's PCYC Gym.
Locals will have the opportunity of watching 10-year-old Mitch Mackie in his second fight.
“Mitch is a natural,” Butler said.
“In his first fight, I saw the makings of a future champion and I don't say that sort of thing lightly.
“As well as my other boys, I'll be giving Erin Punter the opportunity to get some polish for next week's Wide Bay titles.”
Fights start at 7pm. Adult admission is $7.
