Cameron is in doubt with a thumb injury

BASKETBALL: The Bundaberg Radiology Bears will be trying to sink the Maroochydore Clippers in their must-win battle at Century 21 Stadium on Sunday.

Bears captain Kylie Giles said a victory was critical to keep their hopes of a quarter-finals finish alive.

“We must win the rest of our games to finish first or second in our pool and get a chance at the quarter-finals,” Giles said.

“There's only a game or two between us and they're tough.”

The Bears are sitting on 11th place on the competition ladder, while the Clippers are perched on ninth.

Both teams have each won one game from their last five starts.

Giles hailed the return of Heidi Freeburn as being a key factor in keeping their hopes alive.

“I expect Kisha Lee, Stephanie Gandy and Heidi to really step up for us,” she said.

The intensity of the Bears' training was emphasised with an injury sustained by Karla Cameron.

“Karla dislocated her thumb, and as much as I'm hoping she'll be available, I don't think she will be able to play,” Giles said.

“She comes off the bench well and when she does, she's a real hustler.

“It's a big loss for us.”

Building for next year and pride are what motivates the Bundaberg Radiology Bulls in their remaining matches for the 2009 season.

The home team's record is such they have no chance of a finals berth.

Maroochydore are in a similar position to Bundaberg with the Clippers in 11th place ahead of the Bulls in 12th.

Bulls coach Michael Van Dongen expects a tough, even contest between the two teams.

“They've been very competitive in all their games,” Van Dongen said.

“I think we'll match up pretty well.”

Van Dongen conceded the Bulls were disappointed with their standing in the competition.

“I'll admit it's knocked us around,” he said.

“But we're playing for pride and working towards next year now.”

Last round shooting guard Michael Jenkins, who made his debut for the year, impressed his coach.

“Work commitments have prevented Michael from playing up until now,” Van Dongen said.

“But he shot four from five in the 19 minutes he was on the court last week.”

The game between the Bears and the Clippers starts at 12.15pm, while the Bulls' match begins at 2pm.
