AMONG the worthy philanthropists, aid workers and business leaders on the Queen's Birthday honours list, no award is more poignant than Chris O'Brien's.

Prof O'Brien died late on Thursday night, three days before he was due to be appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO), but not before his pioneering dream was fulfilled six weeks ago with confirmation the Sydney Cancer Centre will be built.

The cancer surgeon whose ambition and vision was responsible for the centre at Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) hospital died in the hospital after a two-and-a-half year battle with brain cancer.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said that although Prof O'Brien would not allow the $300 million state-of-the-art centre to be named after him, Lifehouse at RPA will be a fitting way to remember him when it opens in 2012.

"It will be an enduring legacy to a great man, and a dearly missed friend," Mr Rudd said on Friday.

"I believe Chris O'Brien has been a truly exceptional Australian."

His official citation for Australia's second highest civilian honour acknowledges "continued service to medicine and to the community through advocacy and fundraising roles for the development of integrated care and clinical research facilities for people with cancer".

But his CV runs much deeper.

Prof O'Brien, 57, had already been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day 2005 honours for his service to medicine.

Among his many credentials, he was recognised internationally, with the American Head and Neck Society establishing a $US200,000 ($A249,440) fund to have the keynote lecture, The Chris O'Brien Lectureship, named in his honour in 2008.

He wrote books and papers, lectured around the world, was a mentor for senior doctors and was the face of popular reality medical TV show RPA.

As the prime minister said - exceptional.

Three other exceptional Australians have received the country's top honour.

Businessman Malcolm Kinnaird, Justice Peter Underwood and fashion leader and broadcaster Carla Zampatti have all been appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC).

Australians performing noble work overseas have also been recognised.

Dr Marguerette Hill has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her humanitarian work in China.

The founder and director of the New Hope Foundation in Beijing, Dr Hill provides accommodation, medical treatment and foster placements for vulnerable infants.

Sister Joan Doyle and Sister Patricia McDermott have also been awarded an OAM for their charity in Peru.

The Catholic nuns set up and now run the Mother of Mercy Women's House in Cerro Candela in Lima for disadvantaged women and their families, including a childcare centre and a family health service.

And two 1970s actors who played a gay lawyer and a clown are also celebrating an OAM.

Joe Hasham, who played the first gay character in an ongoing Australian TV role in raunchy 1970s soap Number 96, has been recognised for services to performing arts, while John Michael Howson - Clown in children's series Adventure Island - was also recognised for his service to the entertainment industry as a writer and performer.

Sporting figures to receive an OAM include former Wallaby prop Terence Betts, former Australian netball captain Margaret Caldow and Victorian country jockey Neville Wilson.
