HAVING being associated with the building industry for the past 30 years, Greg Sproule saw an opportunity and decided to embrace it with both hands.

Mr Sproule is the proprietor of Ecosmart Toowoomba, on Anzac Avenue.

"I really see solar technologies as the future for power generation for all Australian homes and businesses," Mr Sproule said.

"Ecosmart is essentially the sale and distribution of solar and energy efficient products," he said.

Mr Sproule said one of the hardest facets when opening the business was getting his head around how small businesses operated.

"The hardest part of opening the business was the initial start-up costs in -nquiring about the various dealerships and establishing a strong reputation for quality and service," Mr Sproule said.

However, being a small business owner certainly has its benefits.

"Generating your own income from hard work and dedication is by far the most rewarding aspect of being a small business owner," Mr Sproule said.

"The more you put in the more you can achieve."

Mr Sproule said Toowoomba was one of the best locations in Queensland in which to open a small business.

"I see Toowoomba as a large regional city where the local people still expect quality of both product and service," Mr Sproule said.

One of the best business lessons Mr Luck has learnt on his journey is to ensure that you are always well prepared.

"Prepare in advance for fixed costs and taxation expenditures," Mr Sproule said.

"Overspending and over borrowing in the interests of growth may result in disaster down the track.

"Make sure you budget carefully."

The one piece of advice Mr Sproule has for those looking to enter the world of business is to be prepared for hard work.

"Be prepared to work long hours and put in the effort.

"Remember your good name is the only thing that you will get in life for free.

"Look after it," he said.
