Rowing coach set for NZ return

ROWING Australia's national high performance director Andrew Matheson will return to New Zealand after the London Olympics.

Matheson, who has been in the role for the past four years, will take up a position as general manager performance and strategic investment for High Performance Sport New Zealand.

Despite not extending his contract in Australia, Matheson said he was "fully committed to completing the project I began in 2008".

"I feel as though the high performance program has progressed substantially over the last four years - the next three months will be a key indicator of that," he said.

"Our crews are well positioned ahead of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games."

Rowing Australia CEO Andrew Dee said Matheson had made "a significant contribution to the immediate and future success of Australian rowing in a relatively short space of time".

"He will be difficult to replace," Dee said.
