Rheed's day to revel
THE Bundaberg community flocked to Alexandra Park to welcome home dual Paralympic medallist Rheed McCracken yesterday.
The Bundaberg teen was the centre of attention as people lined up to congratulate the star athlete and take a look at his medals.
Long-time Bundaberg resident John Bonaventura headed to the event to support Rheed.
"I think it's awesome to have someone like him representing Bundaberg," Mr Bonaventura said.
"I reckon what he's done is awesome, especially for someone so young."
Mayor Mal Forman said he was pleased to see so many people supporting Rheed.
"He's a wonderful young man," Cr Forman said.
"He's mature beyond his years and the way he represented not only himself, but the Bundaberg community and Australia, is outstanding.
"He is very inspirational, not only to young children but to older people as well."
Rheed said he was thrilled with the turnout.
"It's awesome," he said.
"I want to thank everyone for coming.
"I never thought I'd come home and have a hero day."
Bundaberg woman Pearl Kuorikoski, the mother of former Australian decathlon champion Les Kuorikoski, attended the event to wish Rheed well.
"I think he's absolutely magnificent," Mrs Kuorikoski said.
"I'm very, very pleased to have known him."
Bundy mum Fiona Sewell took her two children to the event.
"My kids went to primary school with Rheed so we wanted to come and congratulate him," she said.
