Rape trial jury to consider verdict

THE jury in the Bundaberg District Court case of a man accused of raping a teenaged boy is expected to be sent to consider their verdict on Monday.

Shannon Robert Barrett has pleaded not guilty to four counts of rape and one of assault causing bodily harm.

Both the prosecution and the defence made their closing statements yesterday, and Judge Leanne Clare began summing up the case for the jury.

She told the jury the main issue was whether consent had been given for the sexual acts between Barrett and the teenager.

At the start of the trial prosecutor Sam Bain told the jury Barrett, a former boxer, had achieved the rapes through assaults and threatening and controlling behaviour.

He alleged there had been a level of compliance by the complainant because of those assaults and threats.

But defence lawyer Peter Callaghan said the pair had been in a consensual and loving homosexual relationship.
