ONE look into the eyes of a Chinese orphan was all it took for a Bundaberg woman to know she had to help.

Last September, Andrea McLaren travelled to an orphanage in Henan Province, China.

As a physiotherapist and specialist in paediatrics, Mrs McLaren was invited by the Chinese Orphans Assistance Team to help with professional advice for children with disabilities, and to provide professional development to the Chinese staff.

While there she met a four-month-old baby girl named Xin Yi, with a congenital club foot and amniotic banding deformities of both her hands, affecting the fingers.

"When we first went to the orphanage we went to a room and there was row upon row of cots," she said. "I saw this little girl and could tell she was bright."

After a sleepless night, Mrs McLaren knew she had to do what she could to help the baby.

Determined to help this girl walk, Mrs McLaren used her connections, and a bit of luck, and managed to find a physiotherapist in China who provided the Ponsetti method of treatment, the gold standard used in Australia.

"I set up a GoFundMe page to try raise $5000 needed for the months of treatment and equipment that Xin Yi requires," she said.

Bundaberg Combined Ballet Association heard of her plight and has offered all proceeds from a concert, to be held today at Shalom College Performing Arts Centre, to aid her cause.

"That was just fantastic of them," Mrs McLaren said.

The concert will be held from 3pm with a gold coin donation. Visit www.gofundme.com/k3bnxk8k to donate.
