ALMOST one in three teenagers aged 15-19 are unemployed, according to recent statistics for the Wide Bay Burnett region.

The full-time unemployment rate for youths in the age bracket was 27%.

In the broader age category of 15-24, the unemployment rate was 14.7%

The figures, compiled by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations for November 2012, throw into stark relief the plight of youth in the region.

Overall, the unemployment rate across all ages was 8%.

Across the state, the general unemployment rate for the period was 6%, with the joblessness among people 15-24 at 12.3%.

For teens aged 15-19 throughout Queensland, the unemployment rate stood at 24.5%.

During the 12 months to September 2012, the number of young unemployed increased by 4600 to 67,300 nationally.

Member for Hinkler Paul Neville said giving Regional Development Australia more power would reduce youth unemployment rates.
