TWELVE buggies competed across six categories this past weekend at one of Mackay Off Road Racing Club's regular events.

Held at Retreat Station, 66km from Mackay, the competitors battled it out on the dirt to see who could tear up the terrain the fastest.

Mackay Off Road Racing secretary Joe Bugeja said it was a good event even though numbers were a bit down since last time.

"It was a good event"

"In the past we've had up to 25 or 27, but that's sort of the economic downturn at the moment."

Entrants competed across categories including Pro Buggy, Pro Lite, Super 1650, Super Lite, Junior (up to 16) and overall.

John Skinner took out top honours on the weekend, racing to overall winner, while Chris Sollitt took out second and Brian Moohin third.

The next race is expected to be in several weeks, while a public "come out and try day" will be held in early December.
