THE man accused of sexually assaulting an Italian backpacker has been remanded in custody.

It will be alleged Christopher Max Stewart Rogers, 25, entered a room at a Quay St backpacker hostel in the early hours of yesterday, undressed himself and got into bed naked with a sleeping 22-year-old woman.

He appeared in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court that afternoon, but Magistrate Deb Vasta strongly urged Rogers to seek legal advice before applying for bail.

He reappeared in court this morning where he made no application for bail.

Rogers has been remanded in custody until his next court date of August 21.
