IT TOOK a team of 16 firefighters to battle a blaze that has completely destroyed a residential shed in West Bundaberg.

It was a flurry of chaos on Avoca St when the shed, at the bottom of a unit complex, became engulfed with flames shortly before 8.30am today.

Animals were evacuated from inside the unit as well as from neighbouring properties.

Surrounding streets were evacuated due to the heavy black smoke that could even be seen from the Bundaberg CBD.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Service Bundaberg station officer Jonathon Blackley said four fire trucks responded to the property after receiving multiple 000 calls.

"There was significant damage to the shed and a roof and a wall collapsed," he said.

"There were residents there when we arrived and the owner arrived shortly afterwards."

The owner, who was visibly distressed, said he lost the entire contents of his shed.

"A lot of the stuff I can't replace," he said.

Fortunately, the fire was put out before significant damage could be done to his home.

"We brought it under control in 20 minutes but remained on scene for three hours," Mr Blackley said.

At this stage, the fire isn't being treated as suspicious, but fire investigators are still investigating the cause.

"There were gas cylinders inside the shed that made the situation more difficult," Mr Blackley said.

"We were able to stop the fire spreading to adjoining units and vehicles parked nearby.

"The shed's location at the bottom of the units also caused us to use additional lengths of hose and additional access issues."
