Porn debate paints all men as monsters

YOUR SAY: I am compelled to write a response to a recent article about abolishing porn in Toowoomba.

Now it's not like I openly oppose the idea, but I see this as a symptom of a much larger issue that is creeping into our society on a large scale.

The protest held by City Women Toowoomba again painted that narrative of the poor modern woman being objectified.

The original article mentioned a story of a woman whose partner was "addicted to porn, and was abusive".

Now these are two completely different things.

More than 100 people attended the rally.
More than 100 people attended the rally.

Men around the country are beginning to feel the effects of this type of "PC culture" and it is way more harmful than some people's perceptions of objectification.

Men young and old are being painted as horrific creatures that have nothing but hate and violence, and this is even present here in our local region.

This event in itself seems to be nothing more than an attack on men to make them feel bad for looking at pictures of consenting adults.

But we must look past porn. It always has been and always will be a taboo. Let's look at the domestic violence awareness campaign here in town.

Julienne Doran's partner was addicted to porn.
Julienne Doran's partner was addicted to porn.

Oh wait, that isn't domestic violence, it's "violence against women and children", implying that men are immune from such horrific crimes but are the only perpetrators of it, when recent studies by the Australian Institute of Family Studies found that up to half of victims of domestic abuse are in fact men.

You want to see who the victims of this culture are, look at the youth suicide rate in Australia, it is horrendous.

But what is worse than the figure itself is that young men are five times more likely to commit suicide and you cannot tell me that demonising men has nothing to do with this because I was nearly part of that statistic.

All media or any form of information we read is based on the fact that men are horrid, violent, abusive, disgusting, sexist, misogynists.

I do not see myself doing any of these things and yet I am still tarred with the same brush as rapists, child abusers, and spouse abusers.

We have worked hard over the last 40 years to balance the forces between the sexes and it's all being undone by victimising people into the belief that their entire gender is disgusting.

The council of Toowoomba region should face the issues reaching to the wider community.

If you want to stop the objectification of women, why allow a strip club to move in on a major street? Or allow one of the few legal brothels in Queensland be built here?

Instead of chasing after this silly red herring, fix our roads, fix the blunder of a dam on Kitchener St that still floods the road every time it rains.

That's what you were elected for, and on these counts you fail as a collective.
