The tiniest drop in unemployment

JOBSEEKERS in Bundaberg didn't have much luck for the September quarter, with unemployment dropping only a fraction from 8.7% to 8.6%.

The latest available figures, provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, show Bundaberg and surrounding areas still have a higher jobless rate than most of Queensland.

Unemployment is almost a full percentage point lower in the neighbouring Fraser Coast local government area, and decreased from 9.8% to 9.7% in the year to September.

Hinkler MP Keith Pitt said strengthening the local economy would secure more jobs for Bundaberg next year.

"We're doing everything we can to help improve the unemployment rate," Mr Pitt said.

"I fought hard to ensure two of the 18 communities selected nationally for the first phase of Work for the Dole are in the Hinkler electorate."

Mr Pitt said there were a range of other incentives and initiatives in place to help improve the unemployment rate.

"The top three priorities for our office next year are jobs, jobs, jobs," he said.

Across Queensland, the most recent data puts the November jobless rate at 6.9%, compared to the national rate of 6.3%

The ABS regional employment figures showed the jobless rate for the entire Wide Bay region decreased to 8.4% in November.
