'Thuggery': Kiwis in violent home invasion

ZARNE Fraider and William TaiSpeers received jail sentences after the New Zealand nationals were convicted and jailed over violent assaults during a Gladstone home invasion.

Both the Crown and sentencing Judge Greg Koppenol labelled the attacks as "thuggery".

Bars and hammers were wielded when six men went to a town house in Rollo street in a confrontation over a stolen Yamaha motorbike that was being advertised for parts.

Fraider, 35, and Speers, 38, pleaded guilty in the District Court at Gladstone to three counts each of assault causing bodily harm when armed with weapons and in company on December 4 last year to Gary Davies, 45, and his sons Bradley Davies, 22, and Stephen Davies, 23.

Crown prosecutor Gelma Meoli told the court Fraider and Speers had been with four other men who went to the complex at 1.30pm where a parked trailer held pieces of a dismantled motorbike.

"The other four men were armed with crowbars and hammers. It is not alleged these two were," Ms Meoli said. "The purpose was to retrieve the motor bike."

Ms Meoli said it was extremely thuggish and frightening, the Davies' "roughed up" in what was a case of the men taking matters into their own hands over a stolen motorbike.

She said Speers when leaving yelled out to Bradley Davies that he had until the following day "to have the bike put back together and $5000". Bradley Davies told police he purchased it from an unknown male.

"No circumstances call for this type of vigilantism," Judge Koppenol said.

The men were sentenced to two years jail, to serve six months. Speers was released immediately, Fraider back to jail until November 20.
