Fake online store scam defrauding Aussies of cash

ONLINE shoppers are being warned about making purchases from fake online shops.

Fair Trading executive director Brian Bauer said that fake online shops claiming to sell electronics had already defrauded Australians of tens of thousands of dollars.

"New website domains are fraudulently registered, often using the business name and number of a real business," Mr Bauer said.

"The fraudster then creates a fake online store where consumers can purchase products. The consumer makes the payment, but the product never shows up.

"Attempts to contact the trader to get a refund prove fruitless because the websites are quickly shut down and the money is already gone."

Eight fake websites have been identified, most of which have already been closed down. They are:

  • thefoneshop.com.au
  • affordableappliances.com.au
  • directcamerawarehouse.com.au
  • hdcameras.com.au
  • xtremegopro.com.au
  • totaltelevisions.com.au
  • thelaptopfactory.com.au
  • futuregaming.com.au

Any people who have made a payment they are concerned about should contact their bank immediately.

They also should contact police.
