Everything old is new again

WE'VE all done it.

Whether it's shoulder-pads, jeggings or Crocs, we've all embraced some strange and cringe-worthy fashion fad in the past.

Luckily, scientists in Sweden are helping explain why we momentarily devote ourselves to bizarre and often regretful fashion phases by developing a new model explaining how fashion trends emerge and disappear.

The study, entitled The Logic of Fashion Cycles, was published in the open-access journal PLoS One earlier this month.

Their findings?

Firstly, that only a few fashion trends, among the many invented, become very popular (you didn't see people flocking to create their very own meat dress after Lady Gaga's infamous 2010 MTV Award appearance, for example).

Second, those trends with rapidly increasing popularity are also abandoned very quickly.

(Ugg boots, whale tails and trucker caps are all good examples of this.)
