Isis residents tired of poor mobile phone reception

PEOPLE living in Childers are fed up with poor mobile phone reception in parts of the Isis region.

This comes as last month mayors from across the region met with Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss to discuss the urgent need to upgrade telecommunications in parts of the Wide Bay.

Bundaberg Regional Council is hopeful to receive part of the Commonwealth's $100 million funding to address at least 10 blackspots, including a 15km radius around Goodwood towards Childers, Bundaberg and Woodgate.

Childers First National Real Estate principal Philip Dowling said there were many times when travelling along the Bruce Hwy where there was no reception.

"My phone rings a fair bit, but I constantly have to ring people back when I get back to areas that are covered," he said.

"If the phone coverage was better in areas such as Biggenden, Mundubbera, Gayndah it would benefit everyone."

Bundaberg Mayor Mal Forman said there were many areas in the region, including Childers, that lacked adequate mobile phone coverage.

"As the region grows, we need better and improved mobile coverage to cater to the demand," he said.

"We'll be submitting our application to the Federal Government shortly in the hope that we'll receive some funding from the $100 million blackspot funding program."

Cr Forman said while mobile phone coverage was important in times of disaster, it also played a crucial role during our day-to-day lives.

"Mobile coverage dictates what we do from operating a business on the go to making sure we can contact our loved ones," he said.

"If the network isn't performing it ultimately has a flow on effect on our local economy."
