At the Helm of their genre

BUNDABERG has become a place for some time-out for Gold Coast rockers Helm, who have visited the rum city on a number of occasions.

Last in the area in August, the band - with a sound reminiscent of the Butterfly Effect, Cog and Shihad - is looking forward to heading back.

"Bundaberg has become a bit of a party town for us," guitarist Dario Langana said.

"After the last show, we went with the band we had played with to Maccas and the lead singer busted his leg jumping the fence. That was a bit of a wild ride."

But the off-stage antics didn't detract from how serious the band was about its music.

"Sorry, I could talk about technique all day," Langana apologised, running off on a tangent after being asked about how the band's music had changed since the first album in 2008.

"The harder moments are harder and the lighter moments are a lot lighter," Langana explained.

The band is currently riding the success of its latest single Bullets, released in March.

The single featured drumming from Cog's Lucius Borich, who helped write the drum section of the song.

"It was amazing to be up close and personal and watch him work," Langana said.

"He wrote the drum solo and was really able to make the song into something else."

The single comes ahead of the group's third album which is scheduled for release later this year. "We've still got some writing to do and it isn't titled yet," Langana said.

Helm will play at the Sugarland Tavern on Saturday night, supported by Epidemic Over and Soothsayer.
